Setup of the game: Two captains of equal skill are picked and play rock paper scizzors shoot for first pick.
The two of them then take turns picking players for their teams until there is no one left. One team heads to one side
of the court, the other team to the other side. The dodgeballs are placed in the middle (one dodgeball for every two
players). The players back up with their front foot behind the back line. I then say the command, "Ready...Set..Dodgeball!"
On dodgeball, each player sprints to the middle to retrieve a ball for their team, and bring the balls back past the dotted
line on the diagram below. After this, the game can begin.
In order to get an enemy player out you must throw a dodgeball and hit him. If they catch the dodgeball, you are
out, and the player on catchers team who has been out the longest (if there are any players out) gets to come back in.
The other way to get players back in is by putting in a basket. If you can manage to make a basket (only 4 shots have
been put in so far), everyone out on your team gets to come back in. Only one basket can be scored per game. When
there are more than 5 players on your team, you can move on any part of your half of the court, and up to the yellow line
furthest from your side, but when there are 5 or less, you must stay in front of the dotted line. This keeps the game
exciting when there's few players. In order to win, you must get every member of the opposing team out. The only
time you may leave the playing area (you must stay on your side) is when you are retreiving a ball. During this time
if you are hit with a ball, you are out, but you cannot throw anyone out. If you catch a ball outside the playing area,
it does not get anyone out, and you are still in. Once there is someone out, it is their responsibility to fetch dodgeballs
for your team.
Ways you can stay in/get out: If you deflect a ball with a ball, you are still in. If the
ball you were holding falls from your hands because of the collision of a deflected ball, you are out.
If you deflect a ball with your ball, and that ball is caught before it hits the ground, the catch counts. If a ball
hits you, but one of your teammates catches the ball before it hits the ground, the catch counts and you are still in. If
you are hit in the head, you're still out. Sorry.
Equipment: The balls we use are 8 inch diameter rubber kick
balls. This ball does not hurt as much as you think it would, as long as you're not hit in the groin. The equipment
you should bring is appropriate clothes. If there is snow on the court, you're going to want boots, a jacket, and possibly
gloves if you're willing to wear them as you play.
